Authorities in northern Cyprus arrested an Israeli man accused of attempting to transport human embryos out of the country without official authorization. The suspect was detained at Ercan Airport while reportedly preparing to board a flight to Mexico via Istanbul.
Investigators said airport security officers discovered four human embryos stored inside a specialised cryogenic transport container labelled “Life Parcel.” The embryos were reportedly preserved in separate test tubes and allegedly originated from a fertility clinic in northern Nicosia.
Authorities also raided the clinic connected to the case and detained two additional suspects, including the clinic’s director and a local doctor. Officials said the investigation is focusing on possible violations involving the illegal transfer of human genetic material and suspected international embryo trafficking.
According to reports, investigators are examining whether permits had been requested but not yet approved before the embryos were removed from the country. The case has drawn attention to fertility regulations and cross-border embryo transport in northern Cyprus, which operates outside European Union medical oversight frameworks.
