At least five people were reported killed on October 3 as Russia and Ukraine exchanged long-range attacks, with strikes affecting port shipping, the capital and areas under Russian occupation. The reported deaths came from separate incidents, while authorities on both sides described additional injuries.
Russian Strikes Hit Shipping and Kyiv Bridge
A Russian attack struck a Liberian-flagged vessel in Ukraine’s Odesa region, killing one person and injuring three, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority said. Twelve other crew members were evacuated safely. A separate cargo ship was also hit in Odesa port, according to Russian media reports cited in coverage of the attacks.
In Kyiv, Russia hit the capital’s Northern Bridge, injuring two people. It was the second attack on a bridge in the city within two days. Russia’s Foreign Ministry also urged diplomats and other foreign nationals to leave Kyiv, warning they could be harmed.
Deaths Reported in Occupied Areas and Russia
Moscow-appointed authorities said Ukrainian strikes killed two people in occupied Luhansk and one in occupied Zaporizhia, where they reported 10 more injured. Russian media reported another death in a Ukrainian drone attack in the Belgorod region. These casualty figures were issued by authorities in the affected territories and were not independently confirmed in the available account.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv had reviewed intelligence documents indicating that Russia intended to target civilian infrastructure, including roads, schools and hospitals. He said Ukraine would respond to attacks on energy infrastructure but would not deliberately target civilian sites. The latest exchange underscores the continuing danger to civilians and transport links as the war enters another winter.
