Gaza Hospital Director Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s Health Deteriorates in Israeli Detention

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Gaza Strip, is facing a serious health crisis while in Israeli detention, according to rights activists and his lawyer.

Abu Safiya, who was arrested around 18 months ago during the Gaza war, has been accused by Israel of links to Hamas.

After visiting him at the Rakefet interrogation facility inside Nitzan Prison, lawyer Nasser Odeh said Abu Safiya’s condition had severely deteriorated. He reported that the doctor was brought to the meeting shackled, with recent injuries to his head, eyes, ears and neck, making him difficult to recognize.

Physicians for Human Rights Israel said Abu Safiya was struggling to breathe and speak and appeared extremely weak. The organization and his lawyer called for his immediate transfer from the detention facility and an urgent judicial medical assessment of his condition.
