US President Donald Trump said stopping Iran from developing a nuclear weapon is more important than the potential economic impact Americans could face from rising oil prices and regional instability.
Speaking on May 13, Trump said the United States would continue efforts to pressure Iran despite concerns that tensions in the Middle East could affect global energy markets and increase costs for consumers. “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
The comments come as Washington continues discussions with regional allies and maintains sanctions targeting Iran’s economy and nuclear programme. Oil prices have fluctuated in recent weeks amid fears of a broader regional conflict involving Iran and US-backed allies.
Trump acknowledged that Americans could experience economic hardship if tensions escalate further, but argued that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear capabilities remains a top national security priority. Iranian officials have repeatedly denied seeking nuclear weapons, insisting their nuclear activities are for civilian purposes.
The issue remains one of the most sensitive foreign policy challenges in the Middle East, with diplomatic efforts continuing alongside threats of additional sanctions and military escalation.
