Syria’s Ahmed al-Sharaa Appoints Former SDF Leader Mazloum Abdi as Presidential Adviser

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has appointed Mazloum Abdi, the former leader of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), as a presidential adviser, according to Syrian state media.

The appointment comes after an agreement between the Damascus authorities and the SDF that resulted in the dissolution of the US-backed Kurdish-led force.

The move marks a significant development in relations between Syria’s new authorities and Kurdish forces, which have played a major role in northern and northeastern Syria.

The agreement and Abdi’s new position have also been welcomed by the United States, which had supported the SDF during the fight against the Islamic State group.
