Shocking Photo of Freed Palestinian Journalist Shows Conditions in Israeli Prisons
A Palestinian rights group has described a “shocking” image of recently released journalist Mujahid Bani Mufleh as evidence of what it calls “tragic” conditions in Israeli prisons.
The Palestinian Prisoner Society said Bani Mufleh’s post-detention photo, shared after six months in custody, shows severe physical deterioration, including significant weight loss and visible effects of major brain surgery. The journalist reportedly required extensive medical treatment after developing a serious illness during detention.
According to the group, Bani Mufleh was detained in June 2025 under administrative detention without charge and released in January 2026. He later suffered a brain hemorrhage shortly after release and was hospitalized in critical condition. He continues to undergo long-term treatment.
The rights group alleged that his case reflects broader treatment of Palestinian detainees, claiming widespread practices including inadequate medical care, mistreatment, and psychological pressure in Israeli prisons. It also stated that many released detainees remain in poor health conditions.
The organization further claimed that Israel has intensified arrests of Palestinian journalists since October 2023, with hundreds reportedly detained during the ongoing conflict.
Israeli authorities have not responded to the specific allegations in this report.
