Lama Khater Describes Alleged Abuse and Harsh Conditions in Israeli Prisons

Palestinian prisoner and political activist Lama Khater has alleged severe mistreatment during her detention in Israeli custody, according to a statement conveyed by her lawyer after a recent prison visit.

Khater said female Palestinian prisoners face ongoing abuses, including physical assaults, humiliation, strip searches, solitary confinement, and restrictions on basic rights. She was arrested during a raid on her home in Hebron in March 2026 and transferred to the Al-Moskobiya interrogation center in occupied Jerusalem.

According to her testimony, she was subjected to a strip search, physical violence, and confinement in a cold, dark cell. She also alleged that guards confiscated her glasses, removed her hijab, verbally abused her and her family, and worsened detention conditions by pouring water on her mattress.

Her claims come amid continued concerns raised by Palestinian prisoner groups and human rights organizations regarding the treatment of female detainees in Israeli prisons, including allegations of harsh detention practices and limited access to healthcare.
