Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected a proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for direct face-to-face talks aimed at advancing efforts to end the war between the two countries.
The rejection comes as diplomatic attempts to find a pathway toward peace continue alongside ongoing fighting. Zelensky had called for a personal meeting between the two leaders, arguing that direct discussions could help break the deadlock in negotiations and address key issues surrounding the conflict.
Moscow, however, dismissed the proposal, maintaining its position that certain conditions must be met before any high-level meeting can take place. Russian officials indicated that substantial progress through other diplomatic channels would be required before a summit could be considered.
The exchange highlights the significant gap that remains between the two sides more than four years after the conflict escalated. Despite periodic discussions and international mediation efforts, both governments continue to disagree on core issues related to territory, security guarantees and the terms of a potential settlement. With no breakthrough in sight, prospects for a negotiated end to the war remain uncertain as military operations continue on the battlefield.
