Palestinian Journalist Sentenced to Four Years
An Israeli military court has sentenced Palestinian journalist Mahmoud Fatafta to four years in prison on charges of “incitement,” according to the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate.
Fatafta was arrested by Israeli forces on 30 May 2024 while travelling through the Container checkpoint northeast of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank. His case was later brought before an Israeli military court.
The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate condemned the sentence, arguing that the prosecution of journalists over their reporting or expression amounts to an attack on freedom of opinion and the press. The syndicate said military courts are being used to intimidate Palestinian journalists and restrict their ability to report.
It also accused Israeli authorities of increasingly using broad “incitement” charges against journalists, activists and others expressing their views, saying the practice contributes to efforts to suppress Palestinian reporting and narratives.
