Israel Continues Detention of Palestinian Doctor After Cardiac Emergency
Israeli authorities are continuing to detain Palestinian gynaecologist Dr Dima Amin after she reportedly suffered a serious cardiac episode shortly after being arrested at her home in Ramallah.
Dozens of Israeli soldiers entered the 54-year-old doctor’s home in the al-Tira neighbourhood around 2am last Tuesday and arrested her over alleged social media incitement, according to her husband, Haider Abu Ghosh.
Amin reportedly experienced severe chest pain following her arrest and underwent a catheterisation procedure. Her lawyer later informed the family that she had been returned to the Moscovia detention centre, although the family said they had not been given access to her medical records.
Israeli media reported that she was transferred to Hadassah Hospital, but her family said they could not independently confirm the report. Her lawyer also told a military court that Amin had been tightly restrained during her transfer, with marks reportedly remaining on her wrists.
Following her initial court hearing, her detention was extended until Monday. Her family says her children, who live and study in Europe, have been unable to communicate with her and remain deeply concerned about her health.
Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem has condemned the treatment of Palestinian detainees, saying Amin’s case reflects wider concerns about violence, inadequate medical care and harsh detention conditions.
Palestinian rights groups have also described her arrest as part of a broader pattern targeting medical workers. They called for the release of detained healthcare personnel and an end to alleged violations against Palestinian medical workers and prisoners.
