At least 18 people have been killed in Kenya following heavy rains that triggered floods and landslides across several regions, authorities said on Sunday. The extreme weather has displaced hundreds of residents and caused significant damage to homes, roads, and infrastructure.

Officials reported that the fatalities were mainly caused by landslides in hilly areas and flash floods sweeping through low-lying communities. Emergency teams have been deployed to affected regions to carry out rescue operations and assist displaced families.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the coming days, raising concerns about further flooding and additional casualties. Authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas to relocate to safer ground as a precaution.

The disaster adds to a growing pattern of extreme weather events in East Africa, often linked to seasonal rains that increasingly result in widespread destruction and humanitarian challenges.
