US envoy Jared Kushner has said the Trump administration will not allow Gaza to be rebuilt until Hamas gives up its weapons.
Kushner, who is also US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, made the comments after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. He said Washington would not “restrict Israel’s right to defend itself” as Israeli strikes on Gaza continue.
The meeting did not produce a breakthrough on implementing a proposed roadmap for Gaza that Hamas has already agreed to.
The US position effectively links reconstruction of the devastated enclave to Hamas disarmament, leaving the future of Gaza’s rebuilding efforts uncertain as the conflict continues.
