Tunisian Court Sentences Ennahda Leader Rached Ghannouchi to Life Imprisonment
A Tunisian court has issued verdicts in the case known as the Ennahda Movement's "secret apparatus" case, involving 35 defendants accused of terrorism-related offences.
The Criminal Chamber specializing in terrorism cases at the Tunis Court of First Instance handed down sentences ranging from 10 years in prison to life imprisonment. Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi received a life sentence in addition to 30 years in prison, bringing his total sentence to 106 years according to local reports.
Former Interior Minister and Ennahda deputy leader Ali Laarayedh was sentenced to 42 years in prison, while Mustapha Khedher received a 96-year sentence. Several other defendants were also given life sentences along with lengthy additional prison terms.
According to a judicial source, the convictions were based on charges including forming and joining a terrorist organization, providing expertise and support to terrorist groups, and other offences under Tunisia's counter-terrorism laws.
The case is one of the most significant legal proceedings involving Ennahda figures amid Tunisia's ongoing political and judicial developments.
