CPJ Board Member Removed as Group Reviews Gaza Journalist Death Toll

The Committee to Protect Journalists (Committee to Protect Journalists) has come under renewed attention after board member Nika Soon-Shiong said she was no longer serving on its board while the organisation conducts a review of journalists killed in Gaza.

Soon-Shiong, publisher of Drop Site News, said she was informed her board membership had ended after she raised concerns about CPJ’s handling of certain Palestinian journalists included in its Gaza death toll. She shared correspondence on social media suggesting internal disagreement over the organisation’s data and classification process.

In response, CPJ said her five-year board term had concluded in June 2026, and did not directly link her departure to the ongoing review.

The development comes as CPJ continues examining its records of media workers killed in the war in Gaza Strip, amid broader debate over how journalists are defined and counted in conflict zones.
