At least 11 people have been killed after Tropical Cyclone Maila struck Papua New Guinea, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread destruction.

Authorities said the cyclone triggered flooding and landslides, damaging homes, roads, and infrastructure across affected regions. Emergency teams have been deployed to assist displaced residents, with many communities cut off due to blocked roads and severe weather conditions.

Officials warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue in remote and hard-to-reach areas. Thousands of people have been affected, with many forced to flee their homes as rivers overflowed and villages were inundated.

Papua New Guinea frequently faces extreme weather events, but the severity of Cyclone Maila has raised concerns about preparedness and disaster response capacity in vulnerable regions. Humanitarian agencies are working to deliver aid, including food, shelter, and medical assistance, as recovery efforts begin.
