Who Is Khalil al-Hayya? Hamas Names Veteran Political Figure as New Leader

Hamas has chosen Khalil al-Hayya as the new head of its political bureau, placing one of its most experienced political figures at the center of the movement’s leadership.

Hayya, a Gaza-born veteran based in Qatar, was selected after an internal leadership vote. He replaces Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces in Rafah in 2024 after previously taking over following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh.

For more than two decades, Hayya has held senior positions within Hamas and became widely known for leading negotiations over ceasefires, prisoner exchanges and Gaza’s future. He has worked with regional mediators including Qatar, Egypt and Turkey.

Born in Gaza City in 1960, Hayya joined Hamas during its early years and later served in political and parliamentary roles, including as a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council.

Hayya has survived several assassination attempts, while members of his family have been killed in Israeli attacks over the years. His appointment comes as Hamas faces major challenges amid the ongoing Gaza conflict and regional tensions.
