UNICEF Says Gaza Ceasefire Is a “Deadly Illusion” as Child Deaths Persist
The United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF has described the Gaza ceasefire announced in October 2025 as a “deadly illusion,” saying violence has continued despite the agreement. According to the agency, at least 265 Palestinian children have been killed since the ceasefire began, averaging one child death per day over more than eight months.
UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said children have been killed in homes, schools, tents, and public places, including while playing or seeking shelter. He also reported that more than 400 children have been injured, many with life-changing wounds, and warned that restricted medical access is worsening infections and increasing the risk of amputations.
Elder called for urgent medical evacuations and stronger international action, stressing that ongoing child deaths make the ceasefire meaningless. He also highlighted severe psychological trauma among Gaza’s children due to continuous exposure to violence.
UNICEF further noted that in Lebanon, 247 children have been killed and 992 injured since the escalation of hostilities on March 2.
