Syria Reaches Deal With Russia on Future of Hmeimim and Tartus Bases
Syria says it has reached an agreement with Russia on the future of two key Russian military facilities in the country: the Hmeimim airbase and the Tartus naval base.
According to Syria’s official SANA news agency, the Foreign Ministry said the bases will be transformed into “joint training and capacity-building centres” under new arrangements designed to preserve the interests of both countries.
The facilities were previously used by Russia to support the government of ousted President Bashar al-Assad during Syria’s long-running war.
The agreement signals a new framework for Russian military cooperation with Syria following the collapse of Assad’s government, while allowing both sides to maintain strategic ties and training capabilities.
