Syria President Denies Plans to Intervene in Lebanon After Trump Remarks
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has denied that Syria intends to intervene militarily in Lebanon, following remarks by US President Donald Trump suggesting Damascus could become involved in the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah conflict.
In an interview, al-Sharaa said Syria is focused on “economic channels between Lebanon and Syria, not military ones,” emphasizing that any cooperation should be political, economic, and social rather than military in nature.
Trump had earlier suggested that Syria could play a role in addressing Hezbollah, saying he was “close to giving it over to Syria” in comments reported during an interview. He also expressed frustration over Israel’s struggle to fully defeat Hezbollah.
Al-Sharaa said Syria supports efforts to end the war and called for broader solutions that include restoring economic ties and ensuring stability between Lebanon and Syria, while also addressing regional security concerns.
He added that Syria remains “greatly concerned” about Lebanon’s stability, describing it as directly linked to Syria’s own security. However, he stressed that any Syrian role would depend on Lebanon’s consent and would not involve military action.
The Syrian president also indicated openness to dialogue with Hezbollah if it serves the interests of Lebanon and regional stability.
