Smotrich Claims US Envoy Witkoff Used Controversial Gaza Remarks

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has claimed that US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff described Gaza’s population with highly controversial language during a private meeting after Witkoff’s visit to the territory last year.

Speaking at a conference in Israel, Smotrich said Witkoff made the alleged comment after being shown a video about Gaza. Witkoff has not publicly confirmed the remarks, and the White House had not responded to requests for comment.

Witkoff had previously described his Gaza visit as part of efforts to develop plans for delivering humanitarian aid, while the visit took place during a period of severe shortages and growing international criticism over conditions in the enclave.

During the same event, Smotrich also called for a long-term Israeli security zone in Lebanon and argued for expanding Israeli control over territory.

The far-right minister has repeatedly faced criticism over statements regarding Palestinians and Gaza, while international legal officials have examined allegations related to forced displacement and other violations.
