Seven Killed in Prison Fire Amid Unrest in Northern Syria
At least seven inmates were killed and dozens of others injured after a fire broke out at a prison in Kobane, a predominantly Kurdish town in northern Syria.
The blaze erupted during a prison riot linked to unrest that had spread through the city following the killing of former Kurdish fighter Sami Sheikhmous Hiso. Syrian state media reported that some inmates started fires inside the facility, while other reports said the unrest followed plans to transfer prisoners to another facility in Aleppo.
The victims reportedly died from the fire, burns or smoke inhalation. The prison remains under the management of its former staff and has not yet been formally transferred to Syria's central government as part of the ongoing integration process with Kurdish institutions.
Syrian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and said those responsible would face legal action. The violence highlights continuing tensions in northern Syria as Damascus seeks to consolidate control and integrate Kurdish-held institutions into the state.
