Gaza City Building Collapse Death Toll Rises

The death toll from the collapse of a war-damaged residential building in Gaza City has risen, according to reports, after rescue teams searched through the rubble for survivors and victims.

The six-storey building in western Gaza City had been damaged during the war and was sheltering displaced Palestinian families. More than 100 people were reportedly inside when the structure collapsed.

Palestinian rescue teams managed to pull dozens of people from the rubble, but many others were trapped. Rescue operations were hampered by a severe shortage of heavy machinery and other equipment needed to clear the debris.

The collapse has highlighted the dangers faced by families living in damaged buildings because of the lack of safe alternative housing and limited reconstruction in Gaza.

Authorities and humanitarian organisations have repeatedly warned that many damaged structures remain at risk of collapse, leaving displaced families exposed to further danger.
