A man detonated an explosive device in central Moscow on February 24, killing a police officer and himself in what Russian authorities described as a deliberate attack.

The blast occurred near a police patrol vehicle in the city, injuring at least two other officers who were later hospitalized. Officials said the suspect approached the vehicle before triggering the device, though further details about his identity or motive were not immediately released.

The incident took place on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a date marked by heightened security across the country. Authorities did not immediately indicate whether the attack was linked to the ongoing war or if it was carried out by an organized group. No claim of responsibility was reported.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said a criminal case had been opened and that investigators were examining the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Security measures were increased in parts of the capital following the attack.
