At least eight Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip on May 17, including three workers at a community kitchen in Deir el-Balah, according to local health officials. The strike on the kitchen in central Gaza also injured several others.
Additional strikes were reported in Khan Younis and Beit Lahiya as Israeli operations continued across the territory despite ongoing ceasefire discussions. Gaza’s Health Ministry said at least 72,760 Palestinians have been killed since the war began in October 2023, including more than 870 since the ceasefire period started last year.
Al Jazeera correspondent Hind Khoudary said the Deir el-Balah attack targeted a kitchen serving displaced civilians, raising concerns over the safety of humanitarian operations in Gaza. Hamas condemned the strike, calling it a “war crime”. The Israeli military said one strike killed Hamas commander Bahaa Baroud and claimed another person killed near the military buffer zone posed a threat to soldiers.
