37 Palestinian Journalists Held in Israeli Prisons, Rights Group Says
Israel is currently holding 37 Palestinian journalists in its prisons, including 19 who are being held under administrative detention without charge or trial, according to the Palestinian Prisoner Society.
The rights group said all 37 journalists were detained after the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023. It accused Israeli authorities of targeting Palestinian journalists through arrests, prison sentences, solitary confinement and legal proceedings related to their work and freedom of expression.
Among the most recently detained journalists are Muath Ammarna and Sabri Jibrin, who were arrested after Israeli forces raided their homes in Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank.
The group said Israel is increasingly using administrative detention and other legal measures against journalists, raising concerns over press freedom and the ability of Palestinian media workers to report from the occupied territories.
