North Korea conducts major weapons tests as tensions rise with South Korea
North Korea has conducted a series of major weapons tests, showcasing upgraded missile systems, rocket launchers, and artillery as part of efforts to strengthen its military capabilities against South Korea.
Leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the drills and called for a “deadly and destructive offensive posture,” urging the military to ensure enemies experience “constant fear and uneasiness.” The tests reportedly included upgraded multiple rocket launchers, tactical ballistic missiles, and long-range artillery systems designed for precision strikes on key targets such as airfields and ports.
State media said the developments reflect progress in North Korea’s ability to strike across South Korea, raising concerns about expanded range and accuracy.
In response, South Korea announced plans to significantly expand its drone warfare capabilities, aiming to train around 500,000 personnel as “drone warriors” and enhance military readiness amid growing tensions.
Analysts say North Korea’s advances, along with potential external technical support, are further escalating security concerns on the Korean Peninsula, where US forces remain stationed in the South.
