Iran is planning to establish a restricted maritime zone near the Strait of Hormuz within days, according to Iranian state media, as tensions continue over shipping and the strategic waterway.
Iran’s top security official said the zone will extend from the boundary of a US naval blockade into parts of the Gulf. Vessels entering the designated area could be placed on Iran’s sanctions list.
Iran and Oman are also expected to sign new maps in the coming days outlining regulations for maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
The planned measures could further tighten controls around one of the world’s most important shipping routes and increase concerns over disruptions to regional maritime traffic.
