Hamas marked the 26th anniversary of the Al-Aqsa Intifada on September 28, 2026, and called for Palestinians and supporters abroad to maintain pressure in support of Palestinian rights.
A call for coordinated support
In a statement for the anniversary, Hamas urged Palestinian factions to agree on a shared strategy. It also appealed to Arab and Muslim governments, communities and supporters worldwide to use political, diplomatic, media and public efforts to support Palestinians and oppose measures it says target Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Hamas described the anniversary as taking place amid intensified pressure on Palestinians and on Islamic holy sites in East Jerusalem. The group said Palestinians would not give up their land, rights or national principles. These positions were expressed by Hamas in its statement.
The history of the uprising
The uprising began on September 28, 2000, after Ariel Sharon, then Israel’s opposition leader, visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem. It lasted about five years. Official figures for the period record 4,412 Palestinians killed and 48,322 injured.
Hamas’s anniversary message linked that history to its present appeal for unity and international backing.
