Groups Track Turkish Citizens in Israeli Army for Possible War Crimes Prosecution
Organisations have launched a campaign to identify Turkish citizens serving in the Israeli army and pursue their prosecution, according to a report by Israel’s Diaspora Affairs Ministry.
The campaign reportedly involves tracking Israeli soldiers who hold Turkish citizenship by using publicly available information, social media accounts and family networks to identify their military units and activities.
The network is said to include the World Organization of Law and Academic Society (WOLAS), Freedom Watch Platform, Al-Haq, Al Mezan and the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH), along with groups linked to the Freedom Flotilla and Mavi Marmara.
According to the report, Freedom Watch Platform focuses on identifying Israelis who have served in the Israeli military while holding Turkish citizenship. Its efforts reportedly begin by monitoring social media posts, followers and pages connected to the Jewish community in Turkey.
The organisations say the information gathered could be used to support efforts to bring Israeli soldiers to criminal trial.
The Israeli ministry described the campaign as an organised effort targeting Israeli soldiers and settlers, while some of the organisations named in the report face Israeli or US sanctions or terrorism designations.
