FIFA Denies Infantino Sought Trump Support After Failed World Cup Rights Plan
FIFA has rejected reports claiming President Gianni Infantino sought support from US President Donald Trump after the collapse of a plan to sell a stake in World Cup commercial rights.
FIFA described the report as “pure fiction,” stating that Infantino had not contacted Trump or members of his administration. The denial came after reports suggested the FIFA chief was seeking political backing amid criticism over the failed proposal.
The plan aimed to raise up to $4.2 billion by selling around 20 percent of a new commercial rights entity backed by private investors. However, the proposal faced strong opposition from football stakeholders and was abandoned.
The setback has increased scrutiny over Infantino’s leadership and his chances of securing another term as FIFA president. Infantino has maintained close ties with Trump, appearing alongside him at major football events, while FIFA continues to highlight support from several member federations.
