Australia has pledged approximately $27 billion to accelerate construction of a nuclear-powered submarine shipyard, marking a major step forward in its long-term defence strategy.

The funding will support infrastructure development, workforce expansion and industrial capacity as part of the AUKUS security pact between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom. The shipyard project is central to Canberra’s plan to acquire nuclear-powered submarines in the coming decades.

Officials said the investment will help modernise naval facilities and create thousands of skilled jobs, while strengthening Australia’s domestic defence manufacturing capabilities. The submarine program is viewed as a key component of the country’s broader strategy to enhance maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The announcement comes amid growing geopolitical competition in the region, with Australia seeking to bolster deterrence and deepen defence ties with key allies. Construction timelines extend into the 2030s, with long-term funding commitments expected to continue over several decades.
