FIFA Faces Criticism Over Handling of Palestinian Football Issues

Political scientist Xavier Abu Eid has criticised FIFA, arguing that the governing body has become increasingly politicised and has failed to uphold its commitment to human rights, particularly regarding Palestinian football.

In the opinion piece, the author says FIFA has repeatedly rejected calls to take action against the Israeli Football Association over clubs based in Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. He also accuses the organisation of failing to respond to the killing, detention and travel restrictions affecting Palestinian footballers and the destruction of sports facilities.

The article further claims that recent World Cup controversies have intensified scrutiny of FIFA's leadership, arguing that the organisation has moved away from political neutrality. Despite these criticisms, the author says Palestinian football continues to endure despite ongoing challenges.
