Dubai’s iconic Burj Al Arab hotel is set to close for around 18 months for a major refurbishment, marking the first significant renovation since it opened in 1999.

The luxury hotel, known for its sail-shaped design and status as one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks, will undergo extensive upgrades aimed at modernising its interiors while preserving its distinctive character.

The refurbishment will be led by French interior architect Tristan Auer and carried out in phases, with the hotel expected to remain closed during the work. The timing of the renovation comes as tourism in Dubai has faced pressure due to regional instability and travel disruptions linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Despite this, officials say the refurbishment is part of long-term planning to maintain the hotel’s global reputation and ensure it remains competitive in the luxury hospitality sector. The Burj Al Arab is widely seen as a symbol of Dubai’s rise as a global tourism hub.
