At least 21 people were killed and dozens injured after a passenger bus plunged off a mountain road in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 20, 2026, authorities said. The accident occurred near Udhampur, in the Himalayan region, when the vehicle collided with another vehicle while navigating a sharp bend, according to reports.
Officials said the bus, which was carrying more than 60 passengers, veered off the road and fell roughly 100 feet (30 metres) down a steep slope. Nineteen people died at the scene, while others later succumbed to injuries in hospital.
Emergency services and local residents rushed to the site to carry out rescue operations, with dozens of injured passengers transported to nearby hospitals, some in critical condition.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims’ families and announced financial assistance for those affected. Road accidents are common in India’s mountainous regions, where narrow roads, sharp turns, and difficult terrain often contribute to deadly incidents.
