Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has faced widespread condemnation after publishing a video showing detained activists from a Gaza-bound aid flotilla following its interception by Israeli forces.
Critics accused Ben-Gvir of using the footage to humiliate and mock activists who were attempting to deliver humanitarian aid and draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Rights groups and pro-Palestinian campaigners described the treatment of detainees as degrading and provocative, arguing the video was intended to intimidate solidarity movements supporting Palestinians.
The flotilla had attempted to challenge Israel’s blockade on Gaza, which has faced increasing international criticism amid worsening humanitarian conditions in the territory. Activists involved in the mission said they were detained after Israeli forces intercepted the vessel before it could approach Gaza’s coast.
Online backlash intensified after the footage spread across social media, with many accusing Ben-Gvir of celebrating the detention of unarmed civilians. Human rights advocates also renewed calls for greater international pressure on Israel over restrictions on aid access and the treatment of activists supporting Gaza. The incident has further fuelled anger over Israel’s policies towards Palestinians and ongoing restrictions surrounding Gaza.
