Police in Sandy, Utah, are investigating after the vehicle of a local Muslim leader was struck by gunfire Monday evening, February 23, in what authorities described as a targeted incident.

Imam Shuaib Din of the Utah Islamic Center was driving near an intersection in the city when multiple rounds hit his vehicle before the suspect fled the scene, according to police. The imam was not injured.

Investigators said early evidence suggests the shooting was deliberate, though a motive has not yet been established. Officers are reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses as they work to identify a suspect.

Following the incident, law enforcement increased patrols around the Islamic Center in nearby West Jordan as a precaution. Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities, including whether bias may have played a role, but emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing.
