The United States Central Command (Centcom) announced that it carried out what it described as “self-defence strikes” against Iranian military targets in Goruk and on Qeshm Island over the weekend.
According to Centcom, the operation was launched in response to what it called aggressive Iranian actions, including the reported downing of a US MQ-1 drone in international waters.
The US military said the strikes targeted and destroyed Iranian air defence systems, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that it claimed posed a threat to commercial and military vessels operating in regional waters.
The strikes mark another escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the US stating that the operation was aimed at protecting freedom of navigation and the safety of maritime traffic in the region.
