The United States national debt has officially grown larger than the country’s entire economy, marking a major financial milestone as government borrowing continues to increase.

Recent Treasury and economic data show total federal debt has surpassed the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), meaning the government now owes more than the total value of all goods and services produced annually in the US economy.

Economists have warned for years that rising debt levels could increase borrowing costs, place pressure on government spending and slow long-term economic growth. Growing interest payments on federal debt have also become a major concern as interest rates remain elevated.

The increase has been driven by years of heavy government spending, tax cuts, military expenditures and emergency economic support measures introduced during crises including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite concerns, some analysts argue the US economy remains resilient due to the dollar’s role as the world’s dominant reserve currency and continued global demand for US Treasury bonds.
