Sixty Palestinians Released by Israel Return to Gaza Describing Alleged Abuse in Detention
Sixty Palestinians released from Israeli detention have returned to Gaza, arriving at Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis for medical examinations. Many appeared weak, injured and unable to walk, with the transfer carried out by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
Several of the released detainees described harsh conditions during their imprisonment, alleging beatings, poor living conditions, medical neglect and prolonged suffering. Some said they were held for more than a year before being informed of their release.
Israel said the detainees were released after investigations concluded they were no longer considered security suspects. According to Israeli rights group HaMoked, nearly 1,300 people from Gaza remain detained under Israel’s "unlawful combatants" law.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns about conditions inside Israeli detention facilities, citing allegations of abuse, inadequate medical care and mistreatment. The ICRC has also stated it has been unable to access Palestinian detainees held by Israel since October 2023.
