Seven Killed in UK Wrong-Side Crash, Including Two Police Officers

Seven people, including two police officers, were killed in a head-on collision during a police pursuit near Middlesbrough in northeast England.

Cleveland Police said five people were travelling in a Volkswagen Passat on the wrong side of a major road when it collided with a marked police car at around 3:39am. All occupants of both vehicles died at the scene.

Police said officers had begun pursuing the vehicle after spotting what they described as a suspicious car. The exact circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

The two officers killed were identified as 37-year-old Matthew Blades and 38-year-old Tom Clough. Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller described them as brave officers who did not return home after their shift.

The tragedy comes amid concerns over a series of similar wrong-side driving incidents in the UK and Ireland. Two recent crashes near Dublin have prompted Irish authorities to warn about reckless driving allegedly encouraged by social media trends.

Irish officials have condemned the behaviour, with police warning that some drivers may be recording dangerous acts for social media. Ireland’s parliament has also asked TikTok to explain how it removes content that appears to promote dangerous and illegal driving.
