A gunman killed at least six people and wounded around 14 others in a shooting and hostage incident in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv before being shot dead by police, authorities said.
The attacker opened fire on civilians in the Holosiivskyi district on Saturday, killing several people in the street before entering a supermarket and taking hostages, according to Ukrainian officials.
Police attempted negotiations for roughly 40 minutes, but the suspect did not respond, prompting special forces to storm the building and “neutralise” him, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said.
Authorities confirmed at least one hostage was killed during the standoff, while others were rescued. The injured included civilians, among them a child.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the motive remains under investigation, with the incident being treated as a potential “terrorist act.” The attack shocked Kyiv residents, as large-scale shootings are rare in the heavily defended capital despite the ongoing war with Russia.
