At least seven people were killed and 85 injured after cross-border strikes hit Afghanistan’s Kunar province on April 27, 2026, including damage to a university.

Missiles and mortar fire reportedly struck Sayed Jamaluddin Afghani University in Asadabad, as well as nearby residential areas. Among the casualties were students, women and children, according to local authorities.

The attack marks the first major escalation since China-mediated peace talks earlier in April, which aimed to reduce months of deadly border clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Pakistan denied targeting civilian sites, calling reports of a university strike “false” and insisting its operations were precise and intelligence-based.

The renewed violence highlights the fragile state of the ceasefire, with both sides accusing each other of harboring militant groups. The conflict, which intensified in February, has already displaced tens of thousands and raised regional security concerns.
