Russian and Ukrainian forces resumed heavy fighting on May 12 after a brief three-day ceasefire expired, with both sides reporting new attacks across several regions. Ukrainian officials said Russian strikes killed at least six people and damaged homes, energy infrastructure and public buildings in areas including Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv and Kherson.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched more than 200 drones overnight shortly after the temporary truce ended. Local authorities in the Dnipropetrovsk region reported civilian casualties and injuries following drone and aerial bomb attacks.

Russia and Ukraine also accused each other of violating the ceasefire during the May 9 Victory Day period. The pause in fighting had been announced amid renewed diplomatic efforts and discussions about possible talks in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Meanwhile, Ukraine claimed responsibility for strikes on Russian gas facilities deep inside Russia, while Moscow continued large-scale drone operations against Ukrainian territory. Despite recent comments from US President Donald Trump and the Kremlin suggesting the war could be nearing a settlement, no agreement has been announced.
