Peru has launched an investigation into alleged human trafficking networks recruiting its citizens to fight for Russia in the war in Ukraine, authorities said on May 2. Prosecutors are examining whether Peruvians were deceived or coerced into joining Russian forces under false promises of work or legal status abroad.

The inquiry follows reports that several Peruvians traveled to Russia and ended up participating in combat operations in Ukraine. Officials are focusing on potential criminal groups that may have facilitated travel, recruitment, and documentation, raising concerns about exploitation and illegal enlistment.

Peru’s government has warned citizens against accepting suspicious overseas job offers linked to the conflict, stressing that such schemes may involve serious risks, including forced military service. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to identify victims and hold those responsible accountable.
