Palestinian Doctor Mazen Rantisi Alleges Abuse and Medical Neglect in Israeli Jail
Dr Mazen Rantisi, a 71-year-old Palestinian physician known as the “doctor of the poor”, has alleged physical abuse and medical neglect during his detention by Israeli authorities.
Rantisi was arrested during a pre-dawn raid at his home in Ramallah on 21 June and was later indicted over his role as chairman of the board of the Union of Health Work Committees, a Palestinian healthcare organisation.
According to reports, Rantisi told a lawyer that prison authorities withheld his regular medication for 10 days after his detention at Ofer prison and continue to deny him one of his medicines. His arrest has drawn criticism from supporters and human rights advocates.
