Miscarriages Increase in Gaza as Healthcare Crisis Deepens, Medical Officials Say

Palestinian medical officials say miscarriages in Gaza have risen sharply during the first half of 2026, raising concerns about the impact of the ongoing conflict on maternal and reproductive health.

According to Dr. Bassam Zaqout of the Palestinian Medical Relief Society, thousands of miscarriages have been recorded, with repeated displacement, damaged healthcare facilities, poor sanitation, malnutrition and limited access to medical care identified as major contributing factors.

Health officials also reported a decline in live births, while shortages of medicines, diagnostic equipment and healthcare staff have reduced the ability of hospitals to provide essential maternal services.

Human rights organizations and medical groups have linked the worsening reproductive health crisis to the destruction of healthcare infrastructure and restrictions affecting access to treatment. Several organizations have called for independent international investigations into the humanitarian and legal implications of the reported conditions.
