NBA star LeBron James faced backlash after telling reporters he had “heard nothing but great things about Israel” during an All-Star Weekend media session.

The remark came as the war in Gaza, which began on 7 October 2023, continues to generate global scrutiny.

According to Palestinian health authorities, the conflict has resulted in more than 70,000 deaths in Gaza, alongside widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure. United Nations agencies report that a large majority of Gaza’s schools have been damaged or destroyed, while hospitals, residential neighborhoods and public facilities have sustained extensive damage during the fighting.

UN officials have repeatedly warned of severe food insecurity and famine risk, citing restricted aid flows, inspection delays and ongoing hostilities affecting humanitarian delivery. Aid convoys and distribution points have also seen deadly incidents during the conflict, prompting international calls for investigations.

Israel is also facing international legal proceedings. The International Criminal Court prosecutor has sought arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and others over alleged war crimes. Separately, the International Court of Justice is hearing a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention.

Supporters of James described his remark as brief and general, while critics said the remark — that he had “heard nothing but great things about Israel” — appeared strikingly out of step with the scale of civilian casualties, infrastructure destruction and international legal scrutiny surrounding the conflict, arguing that such an unequivocal characterisation was difficult to reconcile with the realities widely documented over the past two years.
