Lebanon and Israel Hold New Rome Talks Over Withdrawal and Security Deal

Lebanon and Israel held a new round of US-mediated talks in Rome focused on security arrangements, Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, and the future deployment of the Lebanese army.

The discussions mark the seventh round of negotiations since Hezbollah’s involvement in the wider regional conflict. A previous framework agreement included the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces, Hezbollah disarmament, and expanded Lebanese state control in southern areas.

The United States said the talks aim to eliminate security threats, strengthen Lebanese authority, and create lasting stability between the two countries.

Lebanese officials are seeking a full Israeli withdrawal, while Hezbollah has criticized the negotiations, warning they could lead to further compromises. Meanwhile, the Lebanese army’s ability to manage security and limit armed groups remains a key challenge.

Although violence has decreased, Lebanon continues to report occasional Israeli strikes and military activity in southern villages.
