Israeli Court Upholds Detention of Gaza Hospital Director Without Charge
Israel's Supreme Court has ruled that Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya will remain in detention without charge under Israel's Unlawful Combatants Law.
Abu Safiya, the former director of a Gaza hospital, has been held by Israeli authorities since December 2024 and is currently detained in Nafha Prison. His lawyer says he has been placed in solitary confinement and has not received adequate medical care.
Israeli authorities allege that Abu Safiya has links to Hamas, but no public evidence has been presented to support the claim. Reports indicate that the court's decision relied on confidential evidence that was not disclosed to the doctor or his legal team.
The ruling has sparked criticism from human rights organisations. Physicians for Human Rights-Israel condemned the decision, describing it as a serious moral and legal failure and raising concerns about Abu Safiya's recent transfer to solitary confinement without explanation.
Rights advocates continue to call for greater transparency and due process in cases involving administrative detention and secret evidence.
