Israel has said it plans to take control of areas in southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, including key bridges and surrounding territory, as part of its ongoing military operations.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that forces would control remaining crossings over the Litani River and establish a “security zone” in the region, aimed at limiting Hezbollah’s ability to operate near the Israeli border.
The announcement comes amid intensified fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, with airstrikes and ground operations expanding deeper into Lebanese territory. Officials say the move is intended to push militant forces further north and reduce threats to northern Israel. The Litani River, located roughly 20–30 kilometres north of the border, has long been considered a strategic boundary in previous conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah.
The plan has raised concerns about potential long-term occupation and displacement of civilians, as hundreds of thousands of residents have already fled the area due to ongoing hostilities.
